Riga is one of those places I had heard of, but couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. Greetings! Riga is a fantastic city that is way too underrated. If you have already planned a vacation, congratulations! If not, our Riga travel guide might just be the spark you need to book a ticket and hotel! There are several activities to do in Riga, which I will detail in our Riga City Guide. You'll know exactly what to do in Riga after that, and I'll share all my Riga travel tips with you!
Before traveling, we recommend that you book a hotel in Riga in advance, for example on hotels-scanner.com you can book a hotel with a discount of up to 80%.
What to do in Riga's Kalnciema Street Market?
Our first trip was to the Kalnciema street market, which I had heard of before. It's a locally run street market and one of the most gorgeous places we've seen in Riga. The market is run by locals and was a great way to get a taste of Latvian culture. You can hear them speaking their language, conversing with them and eating their cuisine. It was really delicious and I savored every minute of it.
The city of Riga and its famous sites!
One of the things I liked most about Riga is that everything great is within easy walking distance. We started with a grand tour of a canal and a beautiful park. We sat on benches, listened to street music and marveled at one of the most beautiful parks I have ever seen. We made our way from the park to some of the wonderful places we were able to see!
Statue of Liberty
We walked past the Liberty Monument, which was created to remember all the fallen warriors who served in Latvia's War of Independence, just after visiting the park. It is an important emblem of freedom and independence of Latvia. If you spend time studying the history of Riga, you will understand why these ideals are so important to them.
The Cathedral of the Nativity
We walked a short distance from the Liberty Monument, past some wonderful gift shops, to the Cathedral of Navtivity. It is an amazing structure that serves as the largest Orthodox cathedral in the Baltic providences. We weren't allowed into many parts of the cathedral as we weren't wearing skirts or hoods, but we were stunned by what we saw. So keep in mind that if you want to see the whole interior, you need to dress appropriately.
Cat House
The Cat House is one of Riga's best-known structures. The cat depicted on the skyscraper can be found on every memory of Riga. According to the myth, the owner of the building positioned the cat so that it faced the house of the Great Guild (or the Riga City Council, as they could not determine that in their story). This was meant to show the owner's displeasure as he had a disagreement with one of these parties. Later, the chat turned around because the comment was too insulting.
During your visit to Riga, the Cat House is undoubtedly one of the must-see attractions! It's just so iconic, and I'm sure you couldn't say you've been to Riga if you hadn't seen it.
Riga Guide - The famous Riga cat
Everyone in Riga is crazy about this adorable little guy. It is on every memory, and everyone photographs it!
The House of Blackheads
One of Riga's most recognizable structures. Aside from the cat on the roof, this is one of the most recognizable landmarks. As for the House of the Cat, the House of the Blackheads was the structure that the cat's tail pointed towards.
You won't believe it, but the structure was devastated during WWII || yet it was restored to commemorate Riga's 800th anniversary. Luckily, we wouldn't have been able to see this beautiful structure today if it hadn't been for the rain.
